Philip J. Martinez

Steadicam  Operator

Philip’s interest in Photography began when he was 11 years old when he came across his Father’s Yashica MAT -125 dual lens reflex camera. In addition to still photography, Philip stumbled into theatrical lighting and became very involved in his high school and community theatre groups.  Philip was invited to work as a P.A. on a student film by a friend who was attending NYU’s cinema program.  This work prompted Philip to attend the same program.  It was at NYU that Philip had the privilege of working with Directors David Wain (Wet Hot American Summer and The Ten) and Michael Patrick Jann (Drop Dead Gorgeous).  Philip continued to work with these gentlemen on the MTV show “The State”, which launched his independent film Career.

Philip was introduced to the Steadicam during the fall of 1990 while working on a student film.  After observing the Steadicam in action, he was hooked.  Additionally, Philip had the opportunity to dabble with the Steadicam Jr. rig during his tenure with The State.  In 1999 Philip began to work with a professional rig and was able to operate on a low budget feature film.

Over the next few years, Philip focused his attention on building his career as   a traditional camera operator working on such shows as Queer Eye For The Straight Guy, Second Opinion With Dr. Oz, Martha Stewart Living and Paula’s Home Cooking.  It was while working on Paula’s Home Cooking that Philip was able to reconnect with the use of camera stabilizing devices by working with the Artemis brand.

In the spring of 2007, Philip purchased his own Steadicam Stabilizer and has been steadily working with it ever since. Some recent Steadicam credits include Easy Driver for RAI television,  I Want to Work For Diddy, for VH1 and Scarlett Johansson’s AOL sessions and “Right You Are (if you think you are)” a live theatrical presentation performed at the Guggenheim Museum, directed by Francesco Vezzoli and featuring Cate Blanchett and Natalie Portman in addition to many others.
